Eighth graders are a strange, funny and
hormonally handicapped breed. I know. I have taught
these beautiful children for the past sixteen years and
have no plan to move on.

1013:
Why do I say that they are
beautiful when, for the most part, even their parents
can't stand this age? This year, my classes are participating
in an astounding service project.

104:
Next to being a parent of twin
girls, this project that my students have
embraced has been the most rewarding experience of my life.
1014:
My students, since 2004, have collected, packaged and sent supplies to
the troops in Iraq. Since we began, we have mailed over 400 boxes!

Having learned a couple of years ago of a young man
stationed at Baghdad airport who needed some of the
simple comforts that we take for granted daily (soft
toilet paper?), the teachers on my team decided to see
if our 170 students would want to help.

1015:
The result was more than gratifying as we ended up mailing 26 boxes containing
almost half a ton of supplies. We chose to continue this project with
our kids every year. At Hillcrest, our team carries the label "Caring"
in the Character Counts program and they have definitely earned it!
107:
During the 2004 - 2005 school year, they
collected, packaged and mailed 120 boxes! In 2005 - 2006, they mailed over 60!
We have lost track of the exact number of care packages sent over the years, but we know it is over 400! So far, the "Caring" team of students has already sent 20 packages to four soldiers in Iraq this year. The soldiers that we cared for initially have all come home safe and we now have a new group to appreciate.
1011:

This is the most caring, generous, enthusiastic, beautiful group of kids that
I've ever known! Keep up the good work!
